A Vertical Form Fill Seal Machine, also known as a VFFS, is a common bagging machine used to package goods into bags as part of a production line.
Just as the name suggests, this machine starts by helping to form the bag from roll stock. Then, the bag is filled with product and sealed in preparation for shipment.
The initial step performed by the machine is forming the bag from the roll of film.
To do that, the VFFS machine feeds the film over a cone shaped tube called a forming tube, which shapes the film into the correct bag size and seals the bottom, as well as the vertical seam where the two edges of the film come together.
The next step in the process is filling, which is accomplished by connecting the bagging machine to multi-head scale or other filling machine, such as a multi-head weigher or other filler.
Those two machines are synced electronically, so that as soon as the bag is ready, the product is dropped in automatically.
Once the product has dropped into the bag, the top is sealed, and the bag is completed and cut away.
That top seal on the first bag becomes the bottom of the next bag, and the process repeats.
First, the raw material is manipulated to be cut and then weighed. When the desired weight is reached, the system will automatically control it to stop and then continue to the next process.
After the material enters the packaging bag, the computer controls the sealing equipment of the packaging bag to seal, and then the cutting equipment cuts the packaging bag to achieve the purpose of packaging.
In addition, the packaging system is not fixed, and customers can adjust it according to their needs to achieve their goals.
VFFS machine has mechanism of intermittent or continuous. The intermittent type has a stop motion during a film feeding pitch. During the stop motion, the bottom and top seal is made by the end seal unit, which is fixed its position.
The continuous type has no stop motion and feeds film continuously. Unlike the intermittent type, the end seal unit moves up and down by following to the film feeding motion when end sealing is acted. The up and down movement prevents the product from damage that might be occurred by dropping.
Therefore, the continuous type is chosen for the case of high speed operation, for fragile and delicate products while the intermittent type is adopted for the products which do not have much worry to get damaged by fall and not required for high speed operation.
VFFS systems require less floor area due to the process being carried out vertically.
VFFS is perfect for sealed sachets and pouches, rather than units with other closures such as zips or nozzles.
VFFS can fit the vast majority of budgets due to it being a highly cost-effective system.
HFFS allows greater variety of packaging types and closures.
HFFS can be used for packing a wide range of products.
HFFS is better for heavier products, as they travel along a conveyor belt rather than being fed from a feeding spout.
